RACHA YAI ISLAND

Level: Beginner to Experienced (1hrs and 30mins to the dive site)
Racha Yai (sometimes spelled Raya Yai) is known for it clears water, healthy marine life and generally easy, year-round diving. Because of these typically gentle condition, this island is prime choice for diving training and snorkeling and offers a suitable environment for divers of all experience levels. Most of the better sites are along the east coast, which is protected from the southwest monsoon. Dive sites primarily consist of sloping hard-coral reefs surrounded by white-sand bottoms. Marine life included a variety of reef fish and invertebrates. It is also quite scenic above water, with several superb white-sand beaches bordered by groves of coconut trees.

RACHA NOI ISLAND

Racha Noi (small “Racha”) usually enjoys good visibility like its bigger neighbor to the north, but offers more rugged and dramatic underwater scenery as well as a better chance for big animal encounters. It is worth keeping an eye trained while diving at this site, as jacks and barracuda are frequently cruising by just beyond the reef, and mantas are always a possibility. White tip reef sharks and marbled stingrays are sometimes seen in deeper areas.

Phi Phi is known for beautiful colorful marine life. Topside, amazing limestone cliffs rise dramatically into the sky. The drama continues underwater, where divers can explore the fascinating topography. Over time the elements have eroded the soft rock to from caves, caverns, overhangs and swim-through. Vertical walls drop from surface to beyond 25m. A profusion of soft coral and sea whips grows on these walls. Several types of unusual corals grow in the surrounding waters while tropical schooling fish and harmless leopard sharks patrol the reefs.

KING CRUISER WRECK, SHARK POINT AND KOH DOK MAI

King Cruiser Wreck, On May 4, 1997 the King Cruiser (an 85m. steel-hulled, catamaran-style passenger ferry) stuck the well-charted shoal Anemone Reef while running its regular route from Phuket to Phi Phi.
What was a disastrous event from a navigational standpoint turned out to be a blessing for the dive community. Nowadays King Cruiser become home to many marine lives, as schools of jacks and queen fish gathered to pursue the clouds of baitfish sheltering around the wreck. Reef species like cardinal fish, snappers, lionfish and scorpion fish moved in. Even frog fish have been seen here. Dense schools of barracuda have also taken up residence which makes King Cruiser a very interesting dive sites.

Shark Point: Home to an incredible profusion of marine life, Shark Point easily ranks among the richest marine habitats in the Phuket region. Nearly every square inch of this site is inhabited, providing a density and diversity of reef creatures that seldom seen. Among Shark Point’s biggest attractions are the shy, amiable leopard sharks that the site was named for, often seen resting along known as zebra sharks, these animals are far from the stereotypical image that most people have of sharks, as they pose absolutely no threat to humans.

Koh Dok Mai: Even miles away, Koh Dok Mai (which means “Island of flowers” in Thai) is an imposing sight, as the steep cliffs of this small island tower far above sea. Underwater, the scenery can be equally impressive, with dramatic topography and abundant marine life as well as two large caverns and several smaller crevices punctuate the wall on to island’s east side, is worth having a look at sponge and shellfish covered walls and ceiling of the largest cave. Marine life here is varied and healthy, including a wide range of invertebrates like golden wentletrap snails, zig zag oyster, barrel sponges, black corals, nudibranchs sea whips, gorgonians and various hard corals.
